Decision Snapshot

Problem solved

It solves the problem of running Durable Objects and Workers without relying on a centralized cloud provider, eliminating the need for a control plane or consensus service. It also addresses the contention and blast-radius failures of a shared database by sharding applications by construction.

Deployment reality

The available setup signal starts with: curl -fsSL https://celld.dev/install.sh | sh. Treat this as a starting point, then ask Codex or Claude to inspect the README, environment variables, runtime version, and deployment target before production use.

Commercial use

The recorded license is Apache-2.0. This is a useful commercial-use signal, but teams should still verify license text, dependencies, model/API terms, and trademark constraints.

Capability ceiling

denoland/celld still needs a clearer capability analysis. Use the metadata as a discovery signal, not as a production recommendation.

Editorial Evaluation

denoland/celld is tracked as a Rust project in the Data Tool, Infrastructure area. This evaluation combines public GitHub metadata, category signals, short source summaries, and Git-Stars editorial rules rather than copying project documentation.

Momentum check: the repository has 3.6k total stars, with +0 today, +1.5k this week, and +0 this month. These growth windows help distinguish durable adoption from short-lived visibility spikes.

Maintenance check: current activity is Moderate; the latest push was 60 days ago, and the open issue queue is 8, about 0.23% of total stars. Treat this as an adoption signal, not a substitute for engineering due diligence.

Adoption check: 116 forks and 3.6k watchers suggest how often the project is reused or followed. License signal: Apache-2.0. Always verify license compatibility before commercial or internal use.

Practical fit: this project is most relevant when you need Rust teams evaluating ecosystem-native tooling. Be cautious when you need a legal review, security audit, or production SLA.

Source check: Git-Stars currently has 2 explicit source reference(s) for this report and a recent growth signal of 1.5k. Follow the original GitHub repository for final install, security, and release information.

Overview

celld is an open-source daemon that runs Cloudflare Workers and Durable Objects on your own machines. Each object is its own SQLite database, addressed by name and replicated to an S3-compatible bucket you own; nodes coordinate through that bucket alone, with no control plane or consensus. Idle cells hibernate to nearly nothing.

Key Features

- Self-hosted, distributed Durable Objects with each object as its own SQLite database. - Replication to S3-compatible bucket with no control plane or consensus. - Idle cells hibernate to nearly nothing, and pressure shedding is supported.
